Ballet is a highly-technical style of dance performance whose origins can be traced back to the Renaissance courts of the 15th century. It quickly spread throughout continental Europe during that time, but was concentrated mainly in France and Russia. Much of the terminology used by performers, writers and choreographers of the genre today is based on the French language. Costume styles have changed very little since Ballet began and the tutus and pointe shoes of the early days remain.
Ballet has been adapted over the years to incorporate other musical styles such as Opera or the culture of the country where it is being performed. This has led to more diverse and modern performances for audiences all over the world, but has not quashed the call for the classics such as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake.
